What Is an Asphalt Overlay?
An overlay (also called a resurfacing) involves laying a new 1.5″ to 2″ lift of hot-mix asphalt directly over the cleaned and prepared existing surface. The new layer bonds to the old pavement, creating a fresh, seamless driving surface that looks and performs like new asphalt — at roughly 50-60% of full replacement cost.
Is an Overlay Right for Your Surface?
An overlay is the right choice when:
- The existing base is structurally sound (no major heaving, soft spots, or base failure)
- Surface cracking is widespread but not deep structural failure
- Grade constraints make raising the surface 1.5-2″ acceptable
- Budget favors a cost-efficient solution over full replacement
If the base has failed or there is significant alligator cracking with base movement, an overlay won’t hold long-term — in those cases we’ll recommend the appropriate full-depth repair or replacement option and give you an honest assessment.
Cold Patch Repairs
